Where the middle of the trade actually sits
Half of all flooring companies on Google have 12 reviews or fewer. A quarter have 3 or fewer, and 12.5% have none at all. If your company has 30 reviews you are in the top half of the country and well above the median, which sounds fine until you remember that nobody searches the whole country. They search one town, and the map pack shows three names. In a real metro those three names tend to come from the top tenth, and the 90th percentile here is 98 reviews. The 75th percentile is 40. Those two numbers are the ones to put on the office wall.
The mean of 45.2 is far above the median because a small group of multi-crew companies and showroom chains carry hundreds of reviews each. 9.9% of flooring companies have passed 100 and only 1% have passed 500. Ignore the mean. It describes a business you are probably not competing with.
Ratings are flat, counts are not
The average rating is 4.8 stars. 58.8% of rated flooring companies sit at a perfect 5.0 and 88.2% are at 4.5 or above. A 4.9 does not make you stand out in this trade; it makes you ordinary. What separates companies on the map is the count, the recency, and whether the review text mentions the product and the room: "refinished our red oak in three days", "LVP in the basement after the flood". That text is what Google matches to a search for "basement LVP installer".
Ratings only start to matter on the downside. 5.1% of flooring companies are under 4.0 stars, and that is where a homeowner stops reading. Another 9.4% have no rating yet because they have no reviews, which is the same problem with a different label.
The website gap
80.5% of flooring companies list a website and 19.5% do not. The companies with a site have a median of 17 reviews; the companies without one have a median of 3. We do not claim the site produces the reviews. We claim that the owners who built one also ask for reviews, list hours, and answer the phone, and that Google rewards the whole pattern. A flooring company with no website is competing against 80.5% of the trade with one hand behind its back, and the AI answer engines have almost nothing to cite.
Hours, photos and the email nobody lists
41.7% of flooring profiles show no hours at all. For a showroom that is a lost walk-in. For a shop-at-home company it means Google cannot tell a searcher at 6 p.m. whether you will pick up, and the listing that does show "Open" gets the call. Only 32.9% list Saturday hours and 13.5% list Sunday, which is the exact window when a couple is standing in a room deciding on a floor. 5.4% claim 24-hour availability, which for flooring is mostly a mistake in the settings.
97.3% of listings have at least one photo, so having photos is not an advantage. Having forty photos of finished floors, sorted by product, with the room type in the file name, is. Only 23.9% show a public email, which matters more for builder and realtor referrals than for homeowners.
What to do with this
- Find your review count in the table and set the next target at the 75th percentile, 40. Then the 90th, 98. Ask at the final walkthrough on every install, using the script in the reviews guide.
- If you are in the 19.5% with no website, fix that before anything else. A five-page site with product pages, per-square-foot ranges and tap-to-call is enough to start. The website guide lists the seven things it must do.
- Set real hours on your profile, including the Saturday hours you already keep. Being the only "Open now" flooring company at 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday is worth more than a paid ad.
- Upload twenty finished-floor photos this week, named by product and room. Add a Google post with a current lead time for installs.
- Put your average job and monthly estimate count into the calculator. If the missed-call number is bigger than your ad budget, start with text-back, not ads.
- Check your state's page in this report. Medians vary a lot by state, and your real competition is the three companies above you locally, not the national figure.

Method
This report aggregates 8,325 public Google Business Profile listings collected from Google Maps searches for flooring companies across every US state, deduplicated by place. Review counts and ratings are as displayed on the listing at collection time. "Website listed" means the profile links to any URL; we classify the URL as an owned domain, a social profile, or a free site builder by hostname. Figures are refreshed monthly.
